Managing Transactions

Performance, Fundamentals & Transaction Views
mPortfolio provides three different ways for you to review the stocks that you add to a portfolio.  These are referred to as stock views.  You can toggle between stock views by clicking on the name of the view that you wish to see.

Performance - This is likely the view that you will use more often and is the default view.   It is intended to show you how well your portfolio is performing.

Fundamentals - The Fundamentals view allows you to see detailed information for each stock on your portfolio.

Transactions - This view shows you all the actions that you have taken on the portfolio.  Here you will find a list of stock purchases, sales and dividends.

There are several ways in mPortfolio that you can perform a stock lookup.   Entering a symbol and performing a symbol lookup are covered earlier in this user guide.    You can also perform a stock lookup on any stock that you have added to a portfolio.   This is done by selecting the stock in the transactions list and pressing command-L or by using the popup menu or main application menu and selecting "Lookup Stock".

You can buy stock on the Performance or Transactions stock view.   To open the buy stock form, you can use command-B or use the popup menu or main application menu and select "Buy Stock...".

The stock that is currently on the main application window will be defaulted on the buy stock form.  To select a different stock, you simply change the symbol and tab out of the field.   The current price will be updated.

Complete the fields on the form and click Save to complete the buy.

You can sell a stock on the Performance or Transaction stock view.   If you wish to sell across multiple buy transactions, you would use the Performance stock view.   However, if you wish to select the specific buy, you should use the Transaction stock view.

Selling on the Performance stock view uses a FIFO method of selling.  In other words, the buy transactions sold will be the first ones that you purchased.   Again, if you wish to control which buys are sold, you should perform the sell on the Transaction stock view.

You start the sell transaction by using the popup menu by right clicking on the stock to be sold or by selecting the stock and using the main application menu and selecting "Sell Stock...".  The Sell Stock form will be show.   Enter the correct fields and press Save to complete the stock sale.

If you receive dividends for stocks that you own, you use the Record Dividend form to enter the dividend transaction.   This can be done on the Performance or Transactions stock view.

You start the dividend transaction by using the popup menu by right clicking on the stock to receive the dividend or by selecting the stock and using the main application menu and selecting "Record Dividend..".  The Record Dividend form will be show.   Enter the correct fields and press Save to complete the dividend.

The ">> Dividends" button in the top right corner of the Record Dividend form can be used to lookup recent dividends for this stock.  Pressing this button will open us a side panel that will allow you to select the corresponding dividend.    Form fields will be automatically updated following your selection.

mPortfolio supports both reinvestment and cash dividends.  You can change between these types by selecting the corresponding radio button in the Distribution Action box.   This will change the other fields in the lower portion of the form that will need to be entered.

Transactions can only be deleted on the Transactions stock view.   This is done by selecting the transaction and choosing "Delete Transaction" from the popup menu or the main application menu.   This action can not be reversed.

Depending on which type of transaction you delete, mPortfolio may delete additional transactions.    For example.  If you delete a buy transaction, all sales against this buy will also be deleted.
